What Matters: Leadership Values that Just Might Save America

America is the richest nation in the world, yet the health of our country’s citizens has been in increasingly rapid decline for years. Unless we begin to make significant changes, the odds are great that America’s health care system will eventually collapse under the weight of her citizens’ collective obesity. Americans spend $1.8 trillion a year on health care; now one of the biggest drivers of both public and private spending. Yet, what do we get for all the money? Increased rates of arthritis, obesity, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and hypertension. We pay, but get sicker. What’s wrong? According to Dr. Kantor, we don’t have a true health care system in this country: we have a disease and accident management system — and it’s built to fail. It’s bankrupting us, threatening our prosperity at home and leadership on the world stage. Chronically ill people don’t go to work, and if they do, they don’t work well. And the rest of us foot the bill. In “What Matters,” Dr. Keith Kantor has carefully laid out a no-nonsense plan on what needs to be done to improve Americans’ collective health. What’s surprising is that many of his strategies do not require large investment by the individual, the government, or the private business community. Dr. Kantor is a United States Marine, a doctor of nutritional science and naturopathic medicine, an award-winning entrepreneur, an innovator and a business and industry leader, giving him a unique perspective on the simple – but at the same time, complex – relationships between food and the American healthcare situation. This practical guideline provides common sense solutions and illustrations that will put the country back on the road to good health and fiscal soundness. In addition, Dr. Kantor has woven in a lifetime of stories, anecdotes and life-lessons that make this an entertaining and easy read. As a side benefit, you might just pick up a few pointers from this Marine and CEO on how to be more effective in business and in life.

Overall a great book! Though most importantly, the tie in of Leadership and Health. Why are we an unhealthy America? Dr Kantor points out why ad brings leadership, or lack there of, to the front and center. Why is most of the nation so confused abut why we are unhealthy as a nation when there is no leadership with the most important foundational building block of being healthy…Nutrition. There is no leadership with Nutrition. Politics, subsidies and and big money continue to drive poor products into the foods made for purchase. Not to mention the financial debacle involving healthcare…need I go there. Yes, there is a consumer responsibility to learn and make a wise choice, though begin at the top and lead…be responsible! Dr Kantor lays out a solid plan on how to address and help fix the health care crisis in America. Quite interesting and a positive solution!

Dr. Kantor’s thoughtful and inspiring work is a page turner you just may finish in one sitting.

For those of us paying attention to the issues of our times;
1) The healthcare debate affecting our life quality and longevity,
2) Social (class) warfare splintering America as we know her,
3) Political deadlock crashing our government to a virtual standstill,
4) The financial crisis threatening our very economic core,
“What Matters” matters exponentially.

The book is rich in content underscoring effective solutions to the complex problems of our day. Simply put, Dr. Kantor’s proposed cures make sense.

Dr. Kantor’s skill as a writer is evident in the gravitating, anecdotal commentary he weaves throughout the work. There is a flow and honesty to it that you don’t often see in this type of read.

Highly, highly recommended!

Having finished Dr. Kantor’s book, I came away thinking that if only Congress applied such a back-to-basics approach, things might actually get accomplished. This book is not a compendium of budgetary chicanery or arcane rulemaking. Rather it applies basic nutrition, health and exercise concepts that we all learned, or should have learned, growing up. The good thing is that we as a nation don’t have to rely on our leaders in DC to effect many of the changes Dr. Kantor has suggested in his book, much of it can start at home. A very easy, entertaining and informative read.
